Aura Hybrid using Cobasys Energy Storage Solutions
The
Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) began
testing two passenger buses in early 2004 outfitted
with Cobasys advanced Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery
systems. The buses, originally fitted with lead-acid
batteries, have performed remarkably well over a wide
range of temperature conditions in the Denver area.
Successful testing has yielded improved performance
and a marked increase in operation compared to lead
acid batteries.
Denver RTD introduced a fleet of 36 mall shuttle buses
in 2000. The buses' hybrid electric propulsion system
is powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric
motors. Each bus can carry up to 116 passengers and
is driven by electric battery-powered motors that are
recharged by only a small 4-cylinder CNG engine.
Denver RTD approached Cobasys indicating that they
were not satisfied with the performance of the lead-acid
battery system in their hybrid bus fleet. Short battery
life and the need for reliable battery operation were
the greatest concerns that needed to be addressed.
The solution provided by Cobasys was the NiMHax 288-120,
a system consisting of two NiMHax 288-60 subpacks connected
in parallel, which utilizes the Cobasys flexible high
power Series 1000 NiMH battery module to provide a nominal
voltage of 288 volts and 120 kilowatts of power. A complete
battery system - the NiMHax 288-120 includes: a battery
management system; thermal management system; and CAN
communications - all of the components required for
reliable operation. In addition, Cobasys supplied on-site
technical support for the installation of the battery
systems and continual monitoring of the batteries.
The optimal solution provided by Cobasys married our
batteries and our battery management system with the
buses' electric propulsion system. The NiMHax 288-120
system offered Denver RTD better performance, greater
reliability and a superior battery management system.
Since the battery footprint on the bus did not change,
the NiMHax battery system provided more power than the
original lead acid batteries in the same amount of space.
The main advantages for Denver RTD are increased battery
life and more uptime for their hybrid buses.

GM
needed to find an energy storage system and a source
to help them meet their requirements for a successful
product launch on their production hybrid vehicle.
They selected Cobasys and the NiMHax battery system
for their Saturn Vue Green Line Hybrid SUV.
Cobasys was able to show Saturn that using our patented
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology for energy storage
systems was the best, most reliable and safe technology
available.
The modular NiMHax energy storage system developed
by Cobasys was chosen and tailored to a 36-Volt energy
system for the Saturn Vue Hybrid. The NiMHax system
offered GM a battery package with embedded electronics
and energy management controls included in one small,
lightweight package that could communicate with their
Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) system.
The Cobasys NiMHax energy storage system offered GM
a "plug and play" concept and solution. By
providing system's design, prototyping, manufacturing,
testing, validation, product service and support, Cobasys
allowed Saturn to accelerate development and rapidly
integrate the various systems to meet their needs.

The
GM 2007 Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid mid-size sedan
has been chosen as "Car of the Year" and is
the company's first entry into the hybrid sedan vehicle
marketplace. GM again chose Cobasys and our NiMHax energy
storage system to support this program. The NiMHax system
incorporates Nickel Metal Hydride (NIMH) technology.
The NiMHax energy storage system developed by Cobasys
for all Saturn Green Line hybrid vehicles uses a 36-Volt
high-powered advanced battery system and electronics
in a small, lightweight package.
The Aura Green Line combines sophisticated controls
and a unique electric motor / generator mated to Saturn's
2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine and the Cobasys NiMHax
battery system. This hybrid model delivers a 25% fuel
economy improvement over the base Aura XE model.
The Saturn Aura hybrid system provides: an electric
power assist during acceleration; increased fuel economy
through engine shutoff at idle; fuel cutoff during deceleration;
and the capability to capture electrical energy through
regenerative braking.
Cobasys has positioned itself to provide: application
and product development; systems design; prototyping;
manufacturing; testing; validation; product service;
and support.
