ORION, Mich., June 20, 2005 -- Cobasys announced
today it has received an order from Denver Regional Transportation
District (RTD) to convert ten hybrid buses from lead acid
batteries to their Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery
system solution. The buses are part of a fleet of mall
shuttle buses that operate on compressed natural gas (CNG)
in a hybrid-electric configuration. In addition to providing
their NiMHax 288-120 battery systems, Cobasys will also
supply technical support for installation.
Cobasys retrofitted two lead acid based buses for testing over a year ago. The buses have performed over a wide range of temperature conditions during this time. Successful testing yielded improved performance and a marked increase in operation uptime.
The NiMHax 288-120 is a two-system parallel package (two NiMHax 288-60 systems) that utilizes the Cobasys flexible high voltage Series 1000 NiMH battery module to provide a nominal voltage of 288 volts and 120 kilowatts of power. A complete battery system - the NiMHax 288-120 includes: a battery management system, thermal management system, and CAN communications - all of the components required for reliable operation.
“We’re excited to be chosen by Denver RTD. They are one of the leaders among transit agencies in adopting hybrid technology,” said Eric Johnson, Cobasys Manager of Transportation Sales.
Denver RTD introduced the fleet of 36 mall shuttle buses in 2000. The buses’ hybrid electric propulsion system is powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric motors. Each bus can carry up to 116 passengers driven by electric battery-powered motors that are recharged by only a small 4-cylinder CNG engine.
Cobasys designs and manufactures advanced Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery system solutions for transportation markets, including HEV, Electric Vehicles (EV) and 42 volt applications, in addition to Stationary Back-Up power supply systems for Uninterruptible Power Supply systems (UPS) and Telecom requirements.
Cobasys is a joint venture between Chevron Technology Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER).
